About Montessori Training at RTI

Empowering individuals to be Educators for Child-Centric Excellence

The Sir Ratan Tata Institute (RTI), established in 1928, is dedicated to empowering women through diverse skill development programs. Notably, its esteemed Montessori Teachers Training Course, affiliated with AMI (The Netherlands) and conducted by Ms Zarin Malva, confers the prestigious AMI diploma and offers an enriching cultural immersion in Mumbai. RTI also extends partial scholarships to deserving candidates. Becoming a Montessori teacher indeed involves a comprehensive and intensive training process to ensure a deep understanding and proficiency in the Montessori philosophy and methodology. The training is designed to equip teachers with the knowledge, skills, and expertise required to effectively implement the Montessori approach at different age levels.

The training typically includes the following components:

Lecture-Style Learning: Students attend lectures covering various aspects of the Montessori philosophy, methodology, and curriculum.

Understanding Child Development: Students study child development theories and research to comprehend the different stages of a child’s growth and development. This understanding forms the foundation for adapting teaching approaches to meet the child at their developmental level. Students are taught the art of observation by sending them to different Montessori schools, allowing them to empathize with children and understand their interests, challenges, and learning styles. This empathetic understanding forms the basis of creating a conducive learning environment.

Respect and Trust: Students learn to respect children as individuals, respecting their choices, interests, and abilities. Trust is developed in the child’s capacity to learn and grow at their own pace, guided by the teacher. The training focuses on developing patience in students so that they can foster independence and initiative in children. Students learn how to create an environment that encourages self-directed learning and critical thinking.

Material Usage Training: Students learn how to use each Montessori material in the classroom and understand the variations in their use to adapt to different learning needs.

Practice and Application: Students have dedicated time to practice using the Montessori materials and understand how to incorporate them into the classroom setting effectively.

Album Creation: Students create their own set of albums based on their notes, encompassing all the presentations and variations possible for the entire Montessori curriculum. These albums are comprehensive, including detailed notes and illustrations.

Written and Oral Examinations: At the end of the training, students undergo both written and oral exams. The exams are administered by international examiners who travel to the training centre specifically for this purpose. This assessment ensures that the students have a thorough understanding and can effectively apply the Montessori philosophy and methodology.

Shift in Perspective: Students are encouraged to shift their perspective on education and child development. They learn to view children as competent, capable individuals with their own unique potential and needs.

Holistic Approach: Montessori training promotes a holistic approach to education, considering not only academic development but also social, emotional, and physical growth. Students learn to address the whole child and support their overall well-being.

The emphasis on rigorous training, thorough understanding of the Montessori philosophy, hands-on practice, and comprehensive assessments demonstrates the commitment to maintaining a high standard of education and teaching in Montessori classrooms. Ultimately, Montessori teacher training is about transforming the teacher’s mind set, attitudes, and interactions with children. It’s about cultivating a deep understanding, respect, and love for each child, enabling teachers to guide and nurture them in a way that honours their individuality and potential.
